Managing Virtual Machines

Managing virtual machines in the portal is done through the virtual machine modal.

To get there:

  1. Environments for the main, left-hand navigation.
  2. Select the environment the virtual machine is in from the first column.
  3. Use the Virtual Machines tab to view existing virtual machines.
  4. Select the desired virtual machine from the list, opening the modal to the virtual machine dashboard.

The virtual machine modal has several sub categories that can be used for management and administration:

  1. Virtual Machine Dashboard
  2. Virtual Machine Configuration
  3. Virtual Machine Telemetry
  4. Virtual Machine Settings

Virtual Machine Settings

Users can make changes to the virtual machine settings using the Settings tab on the virtual machine modal.

Basic Settings

Gives the user a space to make changes to:

FieldDescription
NameThe human readable name for the virtual machine.
IdentifierHow the platform identifies this resource.
DeprecateIf checked, the virtual machine will be marked deprecated.
Lock Virtual MachineIf checked, the virtual machine will be locked and the platform will deny attempts to delete it.

Update Root Password

The update root password provides a mechanism for the user to update the root password for the root user of the VM.

Changing Password in VM

Do not change the password inside the VM or the password will not show up correctly in the Cycle portal. Always use the portal or the API to submit a root password change request UNLESS this is unimportant to you.

SSH Keys

Users can add SSH keys to VM's during create or through the form on the settings page. Each time an ssh key is added or removed and the changes are submitted through the Update SSH Keys button, the VM is restarted.

Environment SSH Keys

SSH Keys created for virtual machines can be used for any virtual machine in the environment. SSH keys can be added to the environment through the Virtual Machine SSH Keys form in environment settings as well.

Virtual Machine ID

The ID for the virtual machine, used by the platform as a way to identify this virtual machine.

Hypervisor Container

This section has a link and ID for the hypervisor container for the given VM.

Click the link to open the modal for the hypervisor, this is the only way to directly access the hypervisor and shouldn't be used other than to verify output on the hypervisor instance console or other debugging / administrative tasks.

Migrate the Virtual Machine

For detailed informaiton about migrating visit the platform virtual machines page.

Use the form to migrate the virtual machine, this can only be done intraprovider and within the same region.

Delete Virtual Machine

To delete the virtual machine, use the delete form entering the name of the virtual machine and submitting.
